This was an “over-the-top” 50th birthday celebration held at The Hollywood Athletic Club for a long-standing client, on May 30, 2014. Guests were 100 of the Hollywood power elite, including family, friends, celebrities, philanthropic associates and those involved in the financial community. Our client gave us complete creative license with only three requests; “Give us Classic Hollywood and Bruno Mars. Oh, and design Bruno’s performance area specifically for him.” Since the Grammy-winning star is a cross between Soul Train and Classic Vegas, here’s how we entwined the required elements and forged our imaginations onto it all.
Guests entered Club DB at The Hollywood Athletic Club along a classic leopard carpet lined with hydrangea bushes in 7′ tall vases. The foyer featured two 12’ X 7’ silver gilded mirrors etched with a custom DB logo and blue-washed walls. An art-deco carpet was the centerpiece of the foyer along with a basket-weave mirrored host stand enhanced with an artistic arrangement of white twisted calla lilies and fuschia orchids to set the tone for this Classic Hollywood evening.
Turning left, guests entered a large arched room with white walls and original ceiling art with custom furniture groupings where for two hours they were treated to premium drinks, out-of- this-world passed hors d’oeuvres and ultra high-end raw and sushi bars prepared by Spaghettini Restaurant. Both bars were custom deco designs featuring ice tables with gold inlaid DB logos. This was a classic Hollywood lounge with area rugs and seating done in Regency earth tones and white leather furniture with customized antique mirror tables held votive candles, small fuschia orchids and mini white calla lilies. Splashes of purple, baby blue and fuschia mimicked the client’s home décor. Gold and Silver mercury hurricane lamps enclosed candles inside a fireplace framed by two 7′ tall white vases with lily/dendrobiium arrangements.
A Scenario created photo wall displayed the DB logo and graphics from the invitation. Guests joked and struck a pose on custom gold metallic furniture flanked by matching shimmery gold curtains to memorialize the evening.
A custom stage with a gold tufted wall was the background for our jazz trio featuring Dave Koz, who performed and then played and mingled through the guests to lead everyone across the hall, ‘pied piper’ style into the main room.
This soul train/classic Vegas room, bathed in blue light, was indeed designed for Bruno Mars. It featured standing, stainless steel cocktail tables topped with fuschia roses, gold and white art deco furniture, vintage 70s décor, and custom bars with leather tufted fronts. The centerpiece 24’ X 36’ stage sported a glossy black Marley floor with a custom gold-front façade and a gold disk curtain flanked by 16’ X 16’ towering white leather walls and glam 70s wall scones. A six- foot tall scrim wrapped completely around the room from which eight “looks” with custom logos morphed as the action changed in the room, along with ever-changing wall graphics.
Guests were greeted by MC, John Stamos (yes, that John Stamos … The dreamy John Stamos. Uncle Jesse, himself), after Koz played and danced through guests until everyone reached the stage. A custom cake with a gold-stuffed base and the DB logo sat in the foreground on a gold and black table. Stamos paid tribute to the birthday girl, and he and Koz bantered and led in singing Happy Birthday.
Afterward, the amazing Bruno Mars performed for guests with 60 minutes of outrageous entertainment. At one point, he pulled the client’s daughter onstage and they all danced together. As the finale, Bruno invited the birthday girl on stage and sang his mega hit, Just the Way You Are, to her.
